When it comes to nautical standards, teak is surely one of them.

Teak is a tropical hard wood known for its durability and water resistance.

For this reason, it is commonly used in boat building, and has been for over 2000 years. It is a dense, strong, and flexible wood highly resistant to rot, fungus, and mildew.

It's high oil properties also keep termites and pests at bay. What more could you ask for? Like anything, with time, wear and tear, and exposure to the elements it will require some love but is ultimately fairly low maintenance...

Here are a few options to maintain the life of this hard wood:

  • Au Naturel! Simply leave as is, and the colour will naturally fade to a silvery-grey.

  • Teak Oil which is either linseed oil, tung oil, or a mineral oil blend, and will leave a warm, dark brown finish. It is suggested to reapply every 6 months but I usually only reapply once a year in the spring.

  • Varnish is a clear hard coat leaving a bright, glossy, glowing finish. Varnish will protect your teak the best and will last anywhere from 5-10 years. Although, being exposed to environmental pollutants the colour can change to a grey-black without treatment. With time and exposure to UV rays, varnish is prone to crack and peel.

Materials Used to Oil the Interior Teak of Intrepid:

  • 220 Grit Sand Paper

  • Super Tuff Tack Cloth

  • Star Brite Teak Oil

*Be aware that teak oil stains very easily, so make sure to put down a drop cloth or tape off any areas that you would like to protect.

Here are a few before and after photos of the Interior...
