In the boating world, it's a small community of like minded people. Although, there still seems to be one small divide, the power boater vs. the sailor...
I've heard some off the cuff comments from power boaters judging sailors as being cheap, but I like to view sailors as crafty, imaginative, and environmentally aware.
Also, no matter what, owning a boat isn't cheap so thats just complete bullshit...
When I started working on Intrepid, I was surprised by how many people just started giving me stuff? I had acquired a main sail from one of my Dad's customers. It was fitted for a 40 ft. boat though, so it wouldn't work for little miss Intrepid. It also had the foot of the sail cut off, so I brought it to Sailmaker's in North Vancouver to see if it could be salvaged. They told me it would cost way too much to custom fit this sail, and I would be better off buying the appropriate size of sail for my boat. So, I decided to upcycle the material to reupholster cushions and pillows instead.
In the photos below, you will also see that I gutted the bench seat, sprayed with an anti-mould cleaner, sanded, painted, and caulked all seams.
How to reupholster: Use cushion as template, cut material with extra fabric to wrap around, smooth out edges and corners and staple!
